Pharmaceutical chemistry, also known as medicinal chemistry, is a branch of science that designs compounds having the potential to be drug active ingredients, performs their organic synthesis, determines the chemical structures of these compounds through structure determination methods, and examines the chemical structure-pharmacological effect relationships. Pharmaceutical chemistry is a multidisciplinary branch of science that benefits from many disciplines such as general chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, computational chemistry, pharmacology and biochemistry, which have an important place in the drug discovery process. Improving physicochemical parameters by making chemical modifications on the compounds currently used as drug active ingredients and metabolism studies are also areas of study in pharmaceutical chemistry.
