DEPARTMENT of BIOCHEMISTRY

Biochemistry, literally defined as "living chemistry", is a branch of science that examines the chemical structures in living things at the molecular level. It explains the structures and functions of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water, and many other molecules in our bodies.

The chemical functions of metabolic pathways in the organism must be well known to design and synthesize compounds that are candidates to be active ingredients of drugs according to certain macromolecular targets, to examine the biological effects of new drugs or compounds that are candidates to be active ingredients of drugs and to determine the side effects of drugs. In this respect, biochemical reactions are of great importance in drug research.

The staff of the Department of Biochemistry consists of 1 Professor and 1 Assistant Professor.

Biochemistry has a significant place in the education of the Faculty of Pharmacy. For this reason, the Biochemistry course in the 2nd grade and the Clinical Biochemistry course in the 3rd grade are taught theoretically and practically in our Faculty of Pharmacy. In Biochemistry, we examine organic-inorganic components and metabolism in living organisms, and in Clinical Biochemistry, we examine changes in human metabolism in disease states. In our Clinical Biochemistry laboratory, we apply classical and modern diagnostic methods for the diagnosis of diseases with highly advanced technology.

Academicians in our department investigate various biological activities of natural, synthetic, and semi-synthetic compounds that have the potential to be drugs for the treatment of diseases such as Diabetes, Epilepsy, Alzheimer's, and Cancer. In this context, our academicians are involved in TÜBİTAK, TÜSEB, and BAP projects as executives and researchers. Our students will also take part in these projects as researchers. They will also find a wide range of internship opportunities thanks to our cooperation with the industry. As the Department of Biochemistry, we will be happy to welcome you, our new students, to our R&D and production laboratories, which are the newest and state-of-the-art in Turkey.
