FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a modular system?

Turkish Preparatory Program of Istanbul Kent University consists of four different modules that last for at least seven weeks. These modules are aimed at Turkish language learning at the beginner, elementary, intermediate and upper-intermediate levels respectively. After each module, there is a short break. The student who starts Turkish education at the beginner level at the beginning of the semester has the opportunity to complete all modules at the end of the semester.

How is my Turkish level measured before starting the program?

All students take the multiple choice Placement Exam before the preparatory program starts. Students, who are placed in programs according to their level following the exam results, are eligible to take the Turkish Proficiency Exam if they get a sufficient grade. Those who do not take the Placement Exam begin to learn Turkish from the beginner level.

How will my Turkish level be measured in the module?

Turkish Preparatory Program of Istanbul Kent University is measured by alternative and complementary methods such as midterm exams, assignments, presentations, participation in the course, as well as written exams to be held in four different modules adopted by the Turkish Preparatory Program of Istanbul Kent University.

How can I start my associate and bachelor degree education after the completion of the program with qualification?

All students who have successfully completed the module without absence enter the Turkish Proficiency Exam at the beginning and end of the fall semester, at the beginning and end of the spring semester, id est four times a year. After receiving sufficient points, they can start their undergraduate education.

How can I track holidays?

You can track the holidays with the help of the academic calendar on our website.

Is there an attendance obligation? Does being late for class affect my attendance rate?

Yes. For each module, attendance of all students in 85% of the courses is mandatory. Students arriving late to class, are recorded as “absent” for the duration untill they arrive. For this reason, students are kindly requested to pay attention to their class hours.

Are auxiliary materials used other than the main materials used in the course?

Yes. All our lecturers prepare alternative materials other than the main material determined jointly and share them with students both on online platforms and in the classroom.

Can I appeal the exam results?

Yes. As each new module starts, students and lecturers come together and examine the exam papers. If students want to appeal exam results after this examination, they can prepare a petition for submission to the Secretariat of the School of Foreign Languages within 3 working days or they can send a scanned copy of the petition to turkcehazirlikprogrami@kent.edu.tr. The result of the appeal is forwarded to the student's e-mail address within 3 working days.

What should I do when I get sick, miss an exam or a measurement-assessment?

Students who get ill, miss an exam or a measurement-assessment should receive a medical report from a general hospital. These reports do not apply to course absences; they are only used for make-up exams, presentations, assignments and alternative measurement methods. For Turkish Proficiency Exam, no medical reports are accepted.

Are there any doctors at our university?

Yes. There is a Health Center in our university where a doctor and a nurse work. It is free of charge and available to all students during working hours.

What should I do if I don't come to school due to a family emergency (accident, death, etc.)?

In family emergencies, student should contact the Secretariat of the School of Foreign Languages with a petition explaining the situation or submit a petition to turkcehazirlikprogrami@kent.edu.tr. It is decided by the administration whether the student will be entitled to enter make-up exam or not.

Is administrative action taken against me if I cheat in an exam?

Yes. The exam supervisor fills out a Detailed Fact-finding Form and this form is forwarded to the disciplinary committee and discussed.

What is a Detailed Fact-finding Status Form?

A Detailed Fact-finding Status Form is a document filled out by lecturers to detect and report cheating, inappropriate behavior, situations and conduct that disrupt the course that are likely to be encountered in the classroom or during an exam.

Is there an internet network in our university?

Yes. Istanbul Kent University offers all its students a free internet network that they can connect to within the school.

Are there psychological counseling and guidance services available at our university?

Yes. There is a Psychological Counseling and Guidance Center within our university, and students can get help from this center free of charge.

Can I communicate with lecturers outside the classroom?

You can contact lecturers and send e-mails during the working hours. Lecturers will share with you their contact info at the beginning of each module.

 

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

​Curriculum of Turkish Preparatory Program of Istanbul Kent University consists of at least 4 modules which last 7 weeks. These modules are named as follows to coincide with a level in Turkish learning:

• ​​Beginner (A1)
• Elementary (A2)
• Intermediate (B1)
• Upper-intermediate (B2) 

There is an integrated teaching design in the curriculum at all levels. In other words, there aren't specific courses of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Language skills are taught as a whole.

General Turkish is taught at Beginner (A1) and Elementary (A2) levels. In the levels of Intermediate (B1) and Upper-intermediate (B2), Turkish language skills that students will need in their academic lives, namely academic Turkish is taught. 

The measurement and evaluation system is designed to be process-based to be compatible with the curriculum. Students take one regular exam during the 7-week module. In addition, alternative measurement methods such as process-based writing studies, classroom presentations, video projects, group discussions are adopted to measure the education program. 

At the end of the module, students take Level Exit Test (STS). By taking the average of the grade they have received out of 100 in the module and the grade they have received out of 100 in the STS, each student's average module point is calculated. Accordingly, students are graded in the following manner:
 

• ​​A  letter grade: 85-100
• B letter grade: 75-84
• C  letter grade: 60-74
• F letter grade: 0-59 (Failed)

To move on to the next level, students must get an A, B or C letter grade. Students who receive an F, repeat the same level using different books/materials from the previous level.

In Kent Turkish Preparatory Program, students are required to attend at least 85% of class hours during a module. Students who surpass 15 % absence limit can not take the Level Exit Exam (STS) and they must repeat the level. 

Our students who have sufficient knowledge of Turkish and have a certificate proving that they have succeeded at the level determined by our university from the language proficiency exams, which are considered equivalent by our university, can apply to the Directorate of Student Affairs to be exempt from the Preparatory Program. Applications must be submitted in writing no later than one month before the start of the fall semester courses.

TURKISH PLACEMENT EXAM (SBS)

Students who have enrolled in an Turkish program at Istanbul Kent University take a multiple choice exam called Placement Exam (SBS) to determine their English level. This exam is held to determine English level of students to place them in an appropriate preparatory class, as well as to determine students who will enter Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS). Students who have received sufficient points from this exam are eligible to enter the TYS, while other students are placed at one of the appropriate levels in the Turkish Preparatory Program according to their grades. If students think that they are not placed in a class according to their level, they can contact lecturers within the first week. Students who do not take the exam are placed in an A1 class and study basic Turkish education.

SBS is also required for students who study in an English Programme but wish to study in Turkish Preparatory Program for one year.

TURKISH PROFICIENCY EXAM (TYS)

Istanbul Kent University Turkish Proficiency Exam,  is the exit exam of the Turkish Preparatory Program. TYS is applied to students, who meet the exam entry requirements, before the start of the academic year, at the end of the fall semester, at the end of the spring semester and at the end of the summer term. This exam consists of “reading”, “listening”, “writing” and “speaking” sections. It takes place in two different sessions, "written exam" and "oral exam". Written exam, consisting of reading, listening and writing sections, lasts about two and a half hours.

The written exam is held in the morning. A second session, "speaking" exam is held in the afternoon of the same day or the next day. "Speaking" exam lasts about 15 minutes. At the end of the first session, students learn the place and time of the "speaking" exams from the lists in the classroom where they entered the written exam. Students are asked to be in the specified waiting rooms 30 minutes before their appointment. Exam times are not changed after the lists are announced. If a student misses any session, even if they have a medical report or similar excuse, they can not enter the make-up exam.

During the exam days, students are required to have another official ID with an up-to-date picture along with their school ID with an image. If the images do not match, the lecturer may ask for a second official ID.

TURKISH PROFICIENCY EXAM (TYT) ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS 

Students newly enrolled in the university take Turkish Placement Exam before the Turkish Proficiency Exam, which is held at the beginning of the academic year, on the registration days. Students who get sufficient points in Turkish Placement Exam are contacted and informed that they are eligible to take the Turkish Proficiency Exam and when they will take the exam. Students may prefer to study in the Turkish Preparatory Program at this stage. If student decides to study, he/she waives the right to take the Turkish Proficiency Exam. Newly registered students who do not get a sufficient grade are placed at one of the appropriate levels in the Turkish Preparatory Program according to the results of the SBS. 

Students, who have successfully completed the last level (B2 - intermediate level) of Turkish Preparatory Programme, have attended classes and not failed due to absence in the same academic year, are eligible to enter TYT exams at the end of the fall semester, spring semester or summer term. 

GRADING 

Students are expected to have received at least 60 points in total to be successful in the Turkish Proficiency Exam. The total points are announced as A, B, C and F letter grades. The range from 85 to 100 corresponds to the letter grade A, the range from 70 to 84 corresponds to the letter grade B, and the range from 60 to 69 corresponds to the letter grade C. Students who receive a grade below 60 receive an F letter grade. Exam results are announced to students by sending an e-mail to their institutional email address with the domain of @ogr.kent.edu.tr.

APPEALING EXAM RESULTS

Students have the right to appeal exam results within 5 (five) working days after the exam results are announced. Students who will appeal must sign the appeal form which can be found on the website of Istanbul Kent University and hand it in to the department secretary, or email a scanned copy or photo of it to turkcehazirlikprogrami@kent.edu.tr Appeals are finalized in two working days and the results are announced by sending an e-mail to the students' institutional e-mail address.

VALID EXAMS 

Students who wish to be exempted from Turkish Preparatory Program due to their language proficiency, may submit certificate of valid exams which are accepted by our University, in addition to Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYT) held during certain periods. Students who have a certificate proving that they are successful according to the level determined by our University can apply to the Student Affairs Directorate on this issue. The validity period of these exams is two calendar years. Applications must be submitted in writing no later than one month before the start of faculty courses.
